VISIONS OF ZEALANDIA 3: NIGHTLIFE
1 DEC 2021 - 31 JAN 2022
ZEALANDIA ECOSANCTUARY, WELLINGTON
[See a short video of the exhibition on YouTube]
In her third solo exhibition at Zealandia EcoSanctuary, Judi explores what happens from dusk to dawn, when we might go to sleep, but the natural world burst into life. She uses photo-artistic techniques to tell stories in a series of fanciful artworks from the real to the surreal. Most of the subjects in this exhibition were photographed at Zealandia - Judi’s home-away-from-home.
Judi has long advocated for birds through writing, photography, and conservation fieldwork. Her step into wildlife advocacy through creative interpretation was a natural progression. Freed from the constraints of pure nature photography, she exposes her interpretation of the inner world of others – their thoughts and feelings, hopes and desires – in a form tangible to the human viewer that engenders empathy with other living creatures.
What is fine-art photo artistry? For photo-artists, the photograph is just the first step in the creative process. One digital photo-artistic image can consist of hundreds of layers of photos, graphics, scanned ephemera and textures, lighting and colour adjustments, and digital brushstrokes all blended and masked together to form an image that is more painting than photograph.
Archival framed and unframed limited-edition prints are available in three-four sizes. They can be purchased and/or ordered at Zealandia or via this website (see below). For all the pictures in this exhibition, 10% of the artist's proceeds goes back to conservation in addition to the gallery commission (which also directly goes to support Zealandia's conservation work), thus both the artist and the art collector are participating in wildlife conservation.
There is no opening event for this exhibition, due to covid, but please feel free to contact Judi to meet by arrangement for a personal viewing.
